Exercises proposed in this category have as objective the development of a technical or tactical theme that would occupy simultaneously several players. Focus is on maintaining high attention and concentration for the players involved and optimizing the number of touches with the ball. These "collections" are conceived toward improvement of individual technical/tactical skill, and also toward athletic conditioning; thereby, they include activities conducted at high pace alternated with active recovery periods.

TRAINING RHYTHM AND TEAMīS REACTIVITY

TRAINING RHYTHM AND TEAMīS REACTIVITY

Author: Maurizio Viscidi

The team who wants to be in control of the game on the field must be able to play at high pace and know how to “steal the time” to the opponents,  transitioning with great rapidity from the defensive to the attacking phase, and viceversa. The exercises  proposed by Mr. Viscidi, former coach of A.C.Milan youth sector and presently technical coordinator of the Italian national youth sector, are an effective and practical working tool to train the rhythm and the reactivity of a team.  All together, they consist of 10 technical-tactical modern proposals, with demonstrated value to train counterattacks,  defensive fall-backs and collective breaks.

Maurizio Viscidi: Games or exercises with a specific theme have teams involved in the defensive and attacking phase, alternatively.  Moreover, through the implementation of some restrictions, one can achieve the objective of training  the players to shift rapidly from one phase to the other, independently of  the tactical systems used. In particular, training a team a positive or negative transition should include these types of variables: introduce a second ball or change the size of the playing area or limit the time to achieve a defined objective or force defined approaches/objectives.

PENETRATING RUN - TACTICAL EXERCISES

PENETRATING RUN - TACTICAL EXERCISES

Author: Marco Ceccomori

Exercises proposed in this collection aim at training advancing moves without the ball of players coming from the back line or from midfield, ultimately leading to a shot on goal. The type of advancing move being considered is a penetrating run (“inserimento” in Italian soccer jargon). It refers to the movement without the ball of a player, who quickly advances from the back line or from midfield, with the objective of developing a combination with one or more attacking teammates, leading to a shot on goal. The “inserimento” is associated with two important principles of the attacking phase: mobility and position interchange. Mobility is the ability to implement timely movements on the part of the teammates of the player in possession of the ball, in order to create effective attacking opportunities. Position interchange is the combination of movements including exchange of position between two or more players, belonging to two different team’s sectors (“vertical interchange”) or within the same team’s sector (“horizontal interchange”). Capitalizing with maneuvers that start with a penetrating run is very important when the opposing team is tightly organized around its penalty box and our team has great difficulty in getting through with lateral attacks. In this collection Ceccomori illustrates how the attacking projection (penetrating run) of a player from the back or midfield sector can destabilize the defensive organization of the opponents.

EXPLOITING WIDTH: TACTICAL EXERCISES

EXPLOITING WIDTH: TACTICAL EXERCISES

Author: Marco Ceccomori

The ability of capitalizing on attacking moves on the flanks of the field is of fundamental importance for a team in its offensive maneuvers.
Especially when facing teams that organize a tight defense in their half of the field, by closing well all spaces,  the search for plays that utilize the whole width of the field  is a necessary solution to approach favorable positions for shooting on goal.
Independently of the tactical scheme utilized,  optimal solutions focus on serving an unmarked player  in the right position to send in a cross, possibly to be redirected in goal by a teammate positioned in the middle.   This objective can be more easily achieved if the  team in possession of the ball is able to take advantage  of rapid switches of play toward the “ weak side”  through rapid  switches of play (i.e., taking advantage of the fact that defending teams concentrate their players in the zone where the ball is).
Marco Ceccomori, very competent and experienced coach, presents 12  technical-tactical exercises to help training the team to read the context of the game and create the tactical conditions for lateral attacks.

COACHING NEGATIVE TRANSITIONS

COACHING NEGATIVE TRANSITIONS

Author: Maurizio Viscidi

Knowing how and when to attack the opposing team and being able to neutralize its counterattacks translates into optimization of performance in the defensive phase. Reorganizing the defensive style/approach, according to the context of the game  (properly alternating pressing and withdrawal into defensive posture), is a priority in teaching the defensive phase. Maurizio Viscidi, professional coach of proven experience and competence, presents a series of exercises that suggest how to best proceed in order to optimize the tactical approach in the defensive phase.

Maurizio Viscidi: A team that can quickly reorganize its shape  makes it difficult for the opponent to take advantage of counterattacks.  At the same time,  a well organized team is in a better position of putting pressure on the opponent, once it recovers the ball. The following exercise  aim at training  the team on how to quickly shift from the offensive phase to the defensive phase. As for the positive transitions, even in the situations of negative transitions one can use shadow movements (11 vs 0) or exercises with two teams (with variable number of players) challenging each other.

COACHING POSITIVE TRANSITIONS

COACHING POSITIVE TRANSITIONS

Author: Maurizio Viscidi

To be competitive in today’s soccer it is indispensable to play at a fast pace in order to beat teams that are tactically compact and with good defensive organization. To satisfy this requirement it is indispensable that the team be trained, through creative practical  proposal, to exploit as well as possible, the positive transitions (quick shift from defensive to attacking phase). Maurizio Viscidi, professional coach with well proven experience and competence, presents numerous and practical exercises with a very direct approach.  These exercises can be used at the professional and youth level as well.  They are useful in training not only the player’s mental reactivity, but also individual and collective technical-tactical “behavior”, in order to optimize counterattacks.

Maurizio Viscidi: The following exercises  address the training  of a team to rapidly switch from the defensive phase to the attacking phase. To achieve good results, it is of fundamental  importance to have forwards and midfielders skilled in pressing  together as a group, recover the ball and attack quickly to go to goal. At the same time, it is important to train defenders how to quickly start counterattacks, when they recover the ball. Transition training can be done  through shadow movements (11 vs 0) or with two teams facing each other  with specific tactical themes. The second approach, described in the following exercises, is usually developed by starting  close to the goal where the attack is directed, and thereafter expanding the field of play and number of players.

BALL POSSESSION: EXERCISES IN 1, 2 OR 3 GRIDS

BALL POSSESSION: EXERCISES IN 1, 2 OR 3 GRIDS

Author: Massimo Lucchesi

Description:  Dividing the playing field into sectors (individual grids) is important in order to convey the concepts of organization and tactical discipline.  In addition, it creates specific situations that the player  will face in the game. From a technical standpoint, the exercises have an important influence on the movements mostly utilized by the player  in the game: ball control upon reception, ball shielding, and passing skill. Moreover, the  “situation” exercises proposed are very effective in stimulating, from a tactical standpoint, the player’s ability to best positioning himself with respect to ball’s and opponent’s  position. Finally,  continuous alternation between attacking and defending situations forces the player to frequent adjustments and ensures that the exercise is implemented with high concentration level and at high pace.

EXERCISES OF BALL POSSESSION IN LIMITED SPACE

EXERCISES OF BALL POSSESSION IN LIMITED SPACE

Author: Massimo Lucchesi

Series of proposals to train how to get open, how to control passes, how to shield the ball, and how to pass in limited spaces. The choice of a small playing area makes it possible to continuously involve the players, who have frequent contacts with the ball and are busy in solving typical game situations. Frequent contacts with the ball stimulate in an appreciable way the player´s concentration. The choice of number of external players, internal players, and neutral players is not casual, but functional, with the intent of evenly alternating responsibilities. This allows each player to alternate intense working periods with recovery time. The 25 proposed exercises can be implemented with the whole team or part of it. We start with exercises that include 5 players and gradually increase the total number to 18 players.
